Game Playing Time and Roster

Posted by Marc Carleno on Mar 15 2010 at 04:20PM PDT in March to May 2010

We have an issue that has come to us because of our roster and a mix-up with the league.

Some how one of our returning players did not get posted to our team. League registration always favors returning players with a coach request before any new players even with a coach request.

This issue was not caught until late last week. By then, we had a full 10 player roster. After several meetings between myself and the league as well as several effected parents, it has been decided that we will keep an 11 player roster. Both the league and I did not feel that it was fair to remove one of our new players to another team. Especially since all 11 players requested this team and me as coach.

What does that mean? It means that we now have an exemption from the 2-quarter minimum play time set for our league. It also means that we have to look at the best way to play our team members fairly.

We could use a substitution method where I try to play all players 14.5 minutes a game (8 minute quarters). But this means that I have to try to calculate pull and play times for all 11 players.

The alternative is to have 2 players per game when we have 11 (we will have a few games where we don’t have 11) will get 1 quarter (8 minutes) of play time.

We will have 8 games schedule and it will take us 6 games to complete this 1-quarter play rotation through the team. Last season in 9 games (we had an extra one) we had 3 games where we were missing one or more players.

I also request that if you know your child will miss a game during the season you let me know as soon as possible as it will help me schedule play time for all.

I understand that this means a little less playing time for all; however, the alternative is for a volunteer to move to another team (there are a few teams with only 7 players currently). I will not ask anyone to volunteer; however, if you don’t feel this approach is fair it is your choice to move your child to another team. If you choose to do so, I would request a call prior to you making that decision. That decision should also be made this week to ensure that you get placed on a new team with time to practice before the start of the season.

Thanks,
Coach Marc
